About the Cockapoo
The Cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel (English or American) and a Poodle, usually a Toy or Miniature. It is one of the most popular family dogs in the UK. Adults can be anything from a small toy-sized dog to a sturdy spaniel-sized one, and coats range from loose waves to tight curls.
Temperament
Most Cockapoos are bright, bouncy and affectionate, with a spaniel's enthusiasm for life and a Poodle's quick wit. Dogs from working cocker lines can be especially busy and driven. Many become very attached to their people and need to learn early that being alone is safe.
Exercise
Around an hour a day suits most adults, including off-lead running where safe and games that use their nose. Working-type Cockapoos may need more to stay settled at home.
Grooming
Expect to brush several times a week, paying attention to ears, armpits and legs where mats form first, and to have the coat trimmed every couple of months. A low-shedding coat is likely but not certain, and allergies can still be triggered.
Care & wellbeing
Ask whether the Cocker parent comes from show or working lines, as this affects energy. Both parent breeds carry inherited eye and kidney conditions that can be screened for. Clean and check the ears regularly, and see a vet for head shaking, eye cloudiness or drinking much more than usual.

Living with a Cockapoo
Typical tendencies for the breed. Upbringing, training and the individual matter as much.
History
Cocker Spaniel and Poodle crosses were bred in the United States from around the middle of the 20th century, making the Cockapoo one of the oldest named designer crosses. It became a favourite in the UK from the 2000s onwards. Breed clubs on both sides of the Atlantic have encouraged health testing and multigenerational breeding, but there is no kennel club standard.

Adult Cockapoos typically stand about 25–45 cm at the shoulder and weigh around 5–12 kg. Individuals vary, and males are often larger than females.

Typically 12–15 years. Keeping them lean, active and up to date with vet checks gives the best chance of a long, healthy life.
How much exercise does a Cockapoo need?
As a guide, around 90–120 minutes a day, split between walks, play and sniffing time. Puppies and older dogs need shorter, gentler sessions.

What health problems do Cockapoos have?
The breed can be prone to progressive retinal atrophy (pra), ear infections, patellar luxation. Not every Cockapoo is affected — ask a breeder about health testing, and your vet about what to watch for.
