About the Grand Griffon Vendeen
The Grand Griffon Vendeen is a scent hound from the Vendee region of France, with a rough, wiry coat and a taller, more upright build than the basset types. It was bred to hunt hare and boar in packs through dense scrub, and it carries a strong, deep voice. Bold and hardy, it is very rare outside its home country.
Temperament
A tough, independent hound with a friendly streak. It gets on well with other dogs but follows scent single-mindedly, so it may not come when called. Training is best kept patient and rewarding.
Exercise
Needs long daily walks and runs, ideally off the road and in safe, enclosed ground. This tall hound has stamina to spare and tires slowly.
Grooming
The harsh, wiry coat sheds dirt well but needs combing weekly to prevent knots. Trim the long eyebrows and beard when they get in the way.
Care & wellbeing
Long ears need drying after wet days. Because it can range for miles on a trail, high fencing and a contact tag are sensible.
