About the American Water Spaniel
The American Water Spaniel is a medium-sized spaniel from the United States, developed as a versatile hunting dog for flushing and retrieving game, including from boats and in marshy land. It has a curly, water-resistant coat in liver or brown shades, a strong build and a sturdy but agile frame. It is a relatively uncommon breed.
Temperament
Friendly, eager and intelligent, usually devoted to its family. Can be energetic and sometimes reserved with strangers. Responds well to positive, consistent training, and enjoys having a job to do.
Exercise
Needs an hour or more of daily exercise. Swimming, retrieving and scent work suit it well.
Grooming
Curly coat needs brushing a couple of times a week to avoid tangling, and trimming now and then. Dry ears after swimming.
Care & wellbeing
Floppy ears can trap moisture, so check and clean regularly, especially after swimming.
