About the Catahoula Leopard Dog
The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a muscular working dog from Louisiana, famous for its striking merle coat and often pale or glass-like eyes. It was bred to round up and hold wild cattle and hogs. It is Louisiana's state dog.
Temperament
Catahoulas are intelligent, independent and protective, with a strong working drive. They are devoted to their family but can be wary of strangers and may be dominant with other dogs.
Exercise
They need lots of vigorous daily exercise and mental work. Herding, tracking and agility are good outlets.
Grooming
The short, close coat needs only a weekly brush and the odd bath after muddy work. Check the feet and pads regularly in dogs that work over rough ground.
Care & wellbeing
Catahoulas suit experienced owners with time to train and socialise them thoroughly. Two merle dogs should not be bred together, as puppies carrying two copies of the merle gene are at high risk of deafness and eye defects. Ask about hearing tests, and see a vet if your dog seems not to respond to sound.
