About the Norwegian Elkhound Black

The Norwegian Elkhound Black is a smaller, black cousin of the Norwegian Elkhound Grey, from Norway, traditionally used to hunt elk and other game. It has a compact, sturdy body, a dense, harsh black coat, upright ears and a curled tail. It is the rarer of the two elkhound breeds and is quite hardy.

Temperament

Bold, energetic and independent, it is generally loyal to family but can be wary of strangers. It may be vocal and strong-willed, and benefits from early socialisation and consistent training.

Exercise

Needs plenty of exercise, an hour or more daily. It enjoys hiking and outdoor work.

Grooming

The dense coat needs brushing weekly, and more often during heavy seasonal moults.

Care & wellbeing

Provide plenty of exercise. Keep weight lean. Heat sensitivity is possible in thick-coated dogs.
