About the Rafeiro of Alentejo
The Rafeiro of Alentejo is a large livestock guardian from the Alentejo region of Portugal, developed to protect flocks from wolves and thieves. It has a strong, rectangular, heavy-boned build, a powerful head and a short, dense coat in shades of wolf-grey, fawn or brindle. It is calm but formidable, and wary of strangers.
Temperament
Typically calm and watchful, with a strong guarding instinct. It is usually loyal to its family and wary of strangers, and tends to be independent. Needs experienced, confident handling and early socialisation.
Exercise
A steady walker rather than a runner, the Rafeiro needs daily walks and space to patrol in a secure area. Keep play gentle while it is still growing.
Grooming
Short, dense coat that sheds seasonally. Brush weekly and more during moulting.
Care & wellbeing
Large and heavy, so protect joints through lean weight and sensible exercise. Heat can be hard on thick-coated dogs. Strong boundaries and secure fencing are important.
