About the Romanian Bucovina Shepherd

The Romanian Bucovina Shepherd is a large livestock guardian from the Bukovina region of Romania, developed to protect flocks from wolves and bears. It is a big, strong, long-coated dog with a thick coat in shades of white and grey or fawn patches. It is calm in the home but vigilant, and bold with strangers.

Temperament

Usually loyal and protective with a strong sense of territory. It tends to be wary of strangers, independent and watchful. Needs experienced owners, early socialisation and sound fences.

Exercise

Moderate: daily walks plus space to patrol. Needs mental work and calm routines rather than intensive games.

Grooming

Thick, long coat that sheds heavily. Brush several times a week and more often when shedding.

Care & wellbeing

Large and heavy: protect joints by keeping lean, and avoid over-exercise while growing. Handle with care in hot weather.

Cost to keep

Highest than average
  • Food, insurance and medicines cost more for a big dog
  • Regular professional grooming adds up
  • A 10–12 year commitment

A relative guide, not a price — costs vary a lot by country, insurer and lifestyle.

Is a Romanian Bucovina Shepherd right for you?

Could suit

  • Calmer households and owners who prefer gentle walks

Think twice if

  • You don't have time for frequent brushing or the cost of professional grooming
  • Space, food and vet costs are a concern — giant breeds need more of all three
