About the Australian Kelpie
The Australian Kelpie is a medium-sized Australian sheepdog bred to muster sheep, often with little direction, in hot, tough conditions. It is lean, athletic and tireless, with a short or medium weather-resistant coat in colours such as black, tan, red, blue and fawn. It is still widely used as a working farm dog.
Temperament
Extremely intelligent, energetic and eager to work, usually devoted to its person. Can be intense, and may be too much for sedentary homes. Needs firm, positive training and plenty to do.
Exercise
Needs very high daily exercise and serious mental work, such as herding, agility or other dog sports. A short walk will not be enough.
Grooming
Short coat needs only a weekly brush, though shedding occurs.
Care & wellbeing
Working-type dogs need appropriate work and mental stimulation to avoid anxiety or destructive behaviour. Take care in hot conditions.
