About the Portuguese Sheepdog

The Portuguese Sheepdog, or Cão da Serra de Aires, is a medium-sized herder from southern Portugal, with a wavy or straight long coat and a moustache and beard. It was used to drive sheep and goats and is agile, sturdy and clever. It is uncommon outside Portugal.

Intelligent, loyal and alert, it is usually reserved with strangers. It benefits from clear, positive training and plenty of activity.

Exercise

Needs about an hour or more of daily exercise and mental tasks, such as training games.

Grooming

The coat needs brushing a few times a week to prevent tangles.

Care & wellbeing

Keep it mentally stimulated and check ears. Regular grooming helps spot skin problems.
